How to Submit to Comixology

What is Comixology?

The leader in digital distribution of Comic Books and graphic novels.

Founded in 2007, they deliver using a cloud-based system that allow users to read their purchases on a variety of platforms. Through their site or app you can browse comics, purchase, and read your purchases (or free downloads).

Up till today, they have been limited to what they call “the top 75 publishers, and including independent creators” but now they have opened up the store/service for people like you and me.

“This is also about making sure we always have the best, most diverse content available, the best reading and buying experience, and at the same time, supporting comic book creators around the globe,”

-John D. Roberts, comiXology co-founder.

To get your comic in

Log in –> click “submit your work” –> go through the approval process –> If approved, your in.

It is a free process.

The approval process is a work in progress. First and foremost, we want to maintain a level of professional content that comiXology users have come to expect from our platform. What the definition of professional content is will certainly be something that we refine as we progress into this brave new world.

How much money can I make?

Always a big question, but as always it depends.

Half the money earned goes to comiXology and the other half to you. You have to remember, however, that there are fees that mobile distributors charge for each sale. Meaning the mobile distributors get their fee first and the rest of the money is split between you and comiXology.

How often do you get paid?

First you have make at least $100, then it will take several months. In other words, don’t plan to pay your rent with this money because it is going to take awhile for them to process.

Who owns the rights?

You retain non-exclusive rights to your Comic Book or Graphic Novel when you sell with ComiXology

Marketing your comic

According to the website, they will be promoting your title in the quick links and main navigation pages. They also mention they will be implementing a promotional program that will promote some of their independent creators.

I wouldn’t hold my breath on this one.

Basically, ComiXology will sell your comic and put it in front of potential buyers. Which is an amazing thing and can help you get noticed, help you sell copies of your work, and possibly allow you to make an income (or a few dollars) from comic sales.

“ComiXology Submit provides an incredible opportunity for creators to sell their work to a highly targeted and global audience of comic book and graphic novel fans. The next generation of creators will reap great benefit alongside more well known creators selling books that are no longer available in print.”
-David Steinberger, comiXology co-founder and CEO.

If you want to do well, you are going to need to promote and market your own project.

For those of you interested in learning how to promote your webcomics, graphic novel, or comic book; I will be releasing a Social Media guide for WebComic Creators next month for those on my mailing list. If you sign up below you will get an email when I release the guide.
