Axe Cop vol. 1 Review

Reading Axe Cop

My favorite part of Axe Cops is the story behind it.

Axe Cop Comic’s Origin Story

Ethan Nocolle (age 34 at the time) draws the images and Malachai (age 10) writes the comic with Ethan’s help.

The comic started in 2009 with Ethan visiting home. It went from being posted on Facebook to eventually having its own site (axecop.com) and now it is published by Dark Horse Comics. Malachai was 5 when they first started creating Axe Cop.

In this book Ethan talks about different techniques he used to get Malachai to write and their basic system for creating new episodes. I found this fascinating as an artist who constantly struggles with his own artistic process. Knowing a 5 year old can create a published story means I need to stop taking my work too seriously and use my intuition to let the story write itself.

Other Tips I Learned from Axe Cop vol. 1

  • Imagining real people with attributes of fictional characters helps with fleshing out deeper characters.
  • Play helps creativity.
  • Writing needs to be fun for it to be worth doing.

Synopsis

Axe Cop is a cop that fights bad guys with his Axe and other weird weapons/physical modification throughout the stories. He also works with an ever changing team of co-heroes all with different weird abilities. Axe Cop’s goal is to kill all bad guys!!!

Review

This would be great to read as a webcomic, but because of the writing is sporadic (because it was written by a 5 year old) it was hard to stay interested for the 4 hours it took me to read it.

I think every graphic novel lover should read this but it best read in sections and then put down for at least a day or two before reading the next section.
