DC Comics Now Available on Kindle, iTunes, Nook and What it means for Independent Publishers

I am excited to see DC comic in Kindle, iTunes, and Nook market.  So much so that I have decided to do a post and a video.  I cover the same material in the video and the post, however,I get a little long winded and the editing gets a little weird, but if you would rather watch that I figure you can choose.

Are you ready to stop going to the comic book shop every Wednesday for your fix of  Justice LeagueBat Girl, Green Lantern. Besides the fact no one reads Bat Girl, you will soon be able to pick them up without leaving the house… Sweet, that means I never have take off my pajamas or put on real shoes.

DC Entertainment (the mother ship of DC Comics, Vertigo, and MAD) announced today it will be launching their entire line of comic books for download from the Kindle Store, iBookstore and NOOK.

DC Entertainment is the top comic book publisher in the United States and now the only comic book publisher to bring their full line up of comic book properties to the major e-book store platforms.

Why is DC Comics Now Available on Kindle, iTunes, Nook?
  • It is no secret that comic book nerds tend to get a little geeky on the technology end.  In other words, their target market is already prepared to use the digital format and if DC adds any kind of perk (such as extra pages or “artist cut” that are more bloody, violent, etc) to ordering digital, people will quickly convert.
  • They can reduce their numbers of orders and get away from having to rely complete on Diamond Distributors for their income.
  • Why not? They already have the comic book in digital form so it is a matter of uploading it to these digital stores.  It is so easy an intern (or a monkey) can do it.

What it means for Independent Publishers

As the release of the comic book Madman of Magic (the one I am making with my wife) comes closer I have been struggling with what platform options I have to sell my digital comic books on.  With issues ranging from image quality, to bulky file sizes, what to charge (price), etc, etc., having a company like DC going fully into the digital distribution marketplace shows me:

  • A – There is money to be made.
  • B – Those platforms & online stores can handle comic books.
  • C – Consumers are there looking for comic book options.
